And this has been the dilemma of the art world for very close to a century now.
How is it that a $4 broom in the broom cupboard suddenly multiplies its value by several thousand dollars if prominently hung in an illuminated gallery? How is it that a piece of crumpled paper tacked by a child onto a wall and which probably leads to a spanking or, at the very least, the parent's great urge to spank, suddenly becomes unquestionable art if tacked to a gallery wall with a $10,000 dollar price tag close by?
Where does one draw the line?
Ironical too is the strange fact that an art work consisting of a blob of colour on a canvas and costing £10 will be laughed out of any gallery by the dealer, assuming that the dealer allowed artist and artwork into the gallery in the first place (and that is highly unlikely) - yet were the artist to demand £100,000 for the very same piece s/he would arouse interest and maybe even get a sale.
So forget Man's arrival on the moon, progress in medicine, skyscrapers that disappear into the clouds. The real Wonders of the World occur in art galleries - those are the places to visit to be truly amazed.
