Photo-realist paintings (ie. meticulous copies of photographs) have their share of fans though I'm not one of them. That Man has the ability to ape the machine is fine. That anyone should want to do so raises a spontaneous question: "What for?" However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it is, after all, simply a question of taste.
In the end, one of the chief aims of photo-realist painters was to distinguish themselves from the masses of abstract painters and their hurling of pigments at a canvas in the hope of a miraculously happy result. That there is a certain logic in wanting to show off one's prowess with a brush or spray gun where such ability exists cannot be denied. The end results, however, tend to be rather plasticky and though the craftsmanship is certainly there, that uplifting, sublime quality all too often isn't.
Entirely different is the case for photo-realist drawings. With these the trace of human involvement cannot be entirely eliminated and it is this that gives them a particular charm.
